For the Hillsboro Trojan girls to beat Abilene, the fourth-ranked in Class 4A, they needed to be at the very top of their game.
They weren’t.
Seven turnovers and three fouls called on both Katie Fast and JuliAnne Chisholm in the first quarter pretty much decided the contest as the Cowgirls won handily, 58-37.
The Trojans didn’t even get a shot off until almost three minutes into the game; they finally scored on a basket by Fast with 3:17 left. By then, the score was 10-0.
By the end of the first quarter the Trojans trailed 17-4 and Fast and Chisholm were both sitting on the bench in foul trouble.
Even if the Trojans’ two tallest players had stayed in the game, Hillsboro would have had a hard time stopping Abilene’s tall and athletic inside players.
To their credit the Trojans pretty much held their own in the second period, and trailed 29-13 at intermission. By the end of the third quarter, the spread was only 18, 43-25.
Chisholm came back in the game in the third quarter and scored 10 second-half points to lead the Trojans in scoring. With the loss, HHS dropped to 6-4 for the season as their six-game winning streak came to an end.
