Hillsboro sweeps Salina Central to open 2004

Hillsboro basketball teams got the new year off to a good start with a pair of wins over Class 5A Salina Central Friday night (Jan. 2) in Salina. The girls won their second game in a row, 33-17, while the boys posted a 67-54 victory.

The girls never trailed in this game, but slowly built their lead as the game wore on. Hillsboro led 6-4 after one quarter and 18-12 at halftime. By the end of three quarters, HHS led 22-14.

The story of this game was the Trojan defense, who harassed the Mustangs into an abmissal 2-for-37 shooting performance from the field, including an 0-for-17 second half.

Leading the way for the Trojans on offense were Katie Fast, JuliAnne Chisholm and Hannah Marsh, who each scored eight points. As a team, HHS shot 60 percent for the game.

With the win, the girls are 2-3 for the year.

The boys, meanwhile, got a boost from the 3-point shooting of Caleb Marsh in their win. The Trojans started slowly and trailed 13-11 after one quarter. But Marsh nailed three 3-pointers and Tyler Peachey added one more to catapult the Trojans into a 33-23 lead at intermission.

The Trojans led by as many as 16 in the third quarter, 43-27, but the Mustangs battled to within 10 before Hillsboro reestablished a 14-point margin, 52-38, after three quarters.

Marsh finished with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Daniel Deckert added 17 points and Peachey finished with 13 to pace Hillsboro.

The win boosted the Trojans to 4-1 for the season.
