The Hillsboro wrestling team battled tough driving conditions and a tough but depleted field to place fifth at the Hesston Invitational on Saturday.

Only seven of the 15 teams arrived to compete on the morning after Friday’s storm. Marion was one of the seven teams that stayed home.

With the field reduced by half, organizers revamped the format into a round-robin affair. The combined Halstead-Sedgwick team came out the winner with 188 points while Hillsboro was fifth with 84.

Tim Glahn, battling at 171 pounds, was the only Trojan to come away with a weight-class title, finishing with a 3-0 record. He pinned Trevor Welch of McPherson at 1:40 of the first round and pinned Rich Traverzo at 1:31 of the second round, then defeated Justin Foster of Halstead, 11-8, in the final round.

Shaw faced only one competitor, losing twice by fall to Jerrod Stout of McPherson-at 2:22 in the second period of the first match and at 1:09 in the first period in the rematch.

Four Trojans placed third.

Trojan coach Scott O’Hare said his team’s performance continued a familiar theme: good effort, but needing to eliminate mistakes that cost them points and some individual matches.

“I saw a lot of good things, but also a lot of little mistakes that cost us big time in some matches,” he said. “We wrestled some really good matches against quality kids, and made some bad mistakes against some lesser kids that I felt like we could have gotten some wins against and didn’t.

“The mistakes are easily fixable, it’s just getting the time to get them fixed.”
