Hesston takes two from Hillsboro on Tuesday

Luke Simmering hit a 15-foot jump shot with 3 seconds left in the game to give the Hesston Swathers a 42-40 win over the Hillsboro boys Tuesday night in Hesston.

Hillsboro led 12-6 after one quarter, 20-16 at halftime and 33-27 after three quarters.But Hesston scored three straight buckets to tie the game at 33 with 5:57 to go. Hesston took the lead at the 4:45 mark, 37-35.

With Hillsboro trailing by a point, 39-38 with 24.2 seconds left, Daniel Deckert missed a pair of foul shots that would have given Hillsboro the lead. Hesston then hit one of two free throws with 22.8 seconds left, but Deckert scored the layup to tie the game at 40 with 11 seconds to go. Simmering then hit his 15-footer for the win.

Tyler Peachey scored 11 points to pace Hillsboro, which falls to 2-1.

The Trojan girls hung with highly ranked Hesston for one quarter, but could not find the offensive firepower to battle for the victory as the Swathers won, 55-26.

Hillsboro trailed only 9-8 after one quarter, but by halftime Hesston was up, 21-10, as Hillsboro hit only one field goal in eight attempts.

The Trojans only managed two shots in the first five minutes of the third quarter — and missed them both — and Hesston pulled away. The Trojans had their best quarter in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

JuliAnne Chisholm scored 10 to pace Hillsboro, which falls to 0-3 for the season.
