Hillsboro and Marion split season openers

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The state-ranked Hillsboro boys lived up to their high billing with an impressive 68-36 win over Marion Friday night in Marion.

Marion jumped to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter before Hillsboro went on a 14-0 run and took control of the ball game. By the end of the first quarter, the Trojans led 21-11. The two teams played evenly in the second quarter as Hillsboro took a 33-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half was all Hillsboro as the Trojan rolled to a 54-24 lead after three quarters and then coasted home.

The Trojan defense and rebounding was outstanding, forcing Marion into 7-for-30 shooting for the game. Hillsboro made 22 of 39 shots, including nine 3-pointers.

Eric Weinbrenner led the way with 16 points and Tyler Peachey added 13.

In the girls game, a senior-laden Marion squad simply overwhelmed a young Trojan team en route to a 59-44 win.

In the first two quarters of the contest, Marion jumped to double-digit leads only to have the scrappy Trojans pull back into contention by quarter’s end.

The Warriors bolted to a 13-2 lead in the opening quarter, but two free throws and a 3-pointer at the buzzer pulled Hillsboro to within four point, 15-11.

In the second quarter, Marion extended its lead to 25-14 only to have Hillsboro rally in the final minutes to pull within a bucket, 31-29 on a basket at the buzzer by Emily Ratzlaff.

Marion committed 19 fouls in the first half and Hillsboro committed 13.

In the third quarter, Marion opened up a lead again and this time Hillsboro simply could not rally back. At the end of three quarters, the score was 45-35 as the Trojans shot three of 12 from the floor.

The cold shooting – at the line and from the floor – continued into the final period as Marion posted the win.

Hillsboro’s three returning starters led the way for the Trojans. Ratzlaff scored a team-high 11 points, followed by Amy Duerksen with 10 and Katie Fast with nine.
