ORIGINALLY WRITTEN JOEL KLAASSEN
Even though Thanksgiving has come and gone again, it’s still easy to be thankful. Our grandsons were here for a few days with their parents, and just the two of them stayed with us while their parents took a few days to get away.
We were reminded again why people have children while they are young. So long as they are awake, they are very busy. They don’t take rest breaks.
Since no one has told me not to write about the grandkids, here are a few highlights of the visit.
— One day we strapped the boys into their car seats and drove them to Nancy’s folks on South Lincoln. It couldn’t have taken more than about 3 minutes to get there.
As soon as I stopped the car, Louie said, “We must have taken a shortcut.” (Their trips in Atlanta are always longer.)
— Can you pretend to be someone you already are? While they were playing, Louie, the younger of the two, told Alex to pretend he was his older brother.

Seems kind of funny that a kid (Alex) who is 5 years old, and is a whiz on the computer, still rides in a car seat.
— One night after they had been in bed for a little while, the little one came out with his hair all sticking out and says, “Alex called me a toddler.”
— I also learned that the big slide in Memorial Park is the funnest one in the whole world-including all of the parks in Atlanta the boys had been to, plus parks in five other states they could name.

Don’t you hate it when you bite your tongue? I wonder if there is anyone who has never had that happen.
With a little research on the Internet, I was surprised to find out it doesn’t happen more often. The average person chews more than 100,000 times per year, with the tongue pushing food here and there constantly while new bites of food are put into the mouth.
— The Hillsboro Trojan football team fared about as well as any other team this year against perennial power Conway Springs, the state champion in Class 3A.
The average number of points scored against them was 8.5 (we had 14) and they scored an average of 48 points (we held them to 42). Many teams were skunked and had in excess of 50 points scored against them.

Here is another reason to shop at your hometown merchant this Christmas season. A woman in Florida was literally knocked down and run over repeatedly by other shoppers on the way to pick up a bargain DVD player at one of the big box stores. By the time the frenzy abated, she was unconscious and no one really seemed interested in her condition.

This is a heads up for the next Memorial Day weekend in Hillsboro. Make plans to come home-unless you already live here-because the Family Festival will be expanded to include the 120th birthday party for Hillsboro and an expanded all-school reunion.
Committee members are working on a mailing to be sent soon to as many HHS alums as we can get mailing addresses. If you are the one updating your class list, the time to finish the project is now.
