Goessel High School music department preparing to present ‘Working,’ Nov. 14-15

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
The Goessel High School Music Department will present the musical, “Working,” at 7 p.m., Nov. 14 and 15, in the GHS Auditorium.

The production is based on Studs Terkel’s book of the same name in which he interviewed workers throughout the United States.

Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell”) and Nina Faso adapted interviews from the book into a musical libretto with music that they wrote, plus other composers such as James Taylor, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead.

Songs in the musical cover a variety of styles from folk, blues, jazz and rock. Titles include: “Loving Al” (Parking lot attendant); “Nobody Tells me How” (teacher); “I’m just Movin'” (Supermarket Checker); “Just a Housewife,” “Millwork,” “Mason,” “It’s an Art” (Waitress); “Joe” (retired); “Cleaning Women;” “Fathers and Sons” and “Something to Point To.”

“The songs and the interviews will affect people in so many ways,” said director Greg Bontrager. “It is a musical that will leave you contemplating your own life and the career decisions you have made.”
