EDITORIALS: Let’s reward the risk

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
We salute and congratulate Dale Franz, owner of Dale’s Supermarket, and Jerold Vogt, Todd Vogt and John Vogt, owners of Vogt’s Hometown Market, for the way they have recreated the art of grocery shopping in Hillsboro.

Ironically, the city’s two long-time and mostly friendly competitors both celebrated openings-or re-openings, as it were-in larger facilities within days of each other. Franz expanded Dale’s Supermarket eastward into the old Schaeffler Mercantile Building, while the Vogts opened an entirely new and significantly larger store in Hillsboro Heights on the city’s northern edge.

Both projects represent a major upgrade from what was. Comments we’ve heard are almost unanimously positive and appreciative, as they should be.

It takes courage, ingenuity and more than a little financial risk to pursue projects of this magnitude. Both parties have demonstrated their confidence in the future support of area shoppers by expanding their respective facilities, services and selections. It’s time for us to demonstrate our confidence in them by renewing our commitment to shop locally whenever possible. -DR
