Kansas Wesleyan-In a defensive battle, Tabor and the Coyotes battled to a scoreless tie Saturday.

“Again, we were disappointed with the result more than the way we played, because we did play very well,” coach Lincoln Wulf said. “This was a team we really wanted to beat.

“We hit the post twice and hit the cross bar once, and we forced their keeper into making some great saves, but we just didn’t score,” he added.

“All through the overtimes, we dominated and they were actually playing for the tie. The last 15 minutes of regulation and both overtimes, they just went with one forward and played everyone else back.”

Wulf said even with no victory, he still sees improvement in the team.

“I think our field play is improving tremendously, and our keeper has come around really well in the last couple games,” he said. “I guess those are some of the little things we need to take away from this season.”

Wulf said several individuals have assumed leadership roles for the Bluejays.

“Guys like Craig Penner, Scott Friesen, Ryan Kelley and Kenton Schroeder have really stepped it up for us,” he said. “We knew from the first couple games of the season we had guys that could control the middle of the field, but we just don’t have enough scoring and that’s been our Achilles’ heel.”

Sterling-Tabor dropped a 2-1 decision Oct. 8 to Sterling.

“This was a real disappointing game for us,” coach Lincoln Wulf said. “We played one of our best games of the year. We have several good opportunities on goal, and their keeper made some good plays.

“Once again it was the same old story,” he added. “We just aren’t able to score when we get the chances. We’ve scored seven goals all year and we’ve had six different players score for us, which is just crazy.”

Tabor’s goal was scored by Kenton Schroeder.

“It was a really nice goal, and it’s his second goal of the year,” Wulf said. “We took the lead, and we outshot and definitely outplayed Sterling, but they got about five shots in the second half, and scored two goals.

“Our defense played a good game and our keeper (Nathan Faul) made some great saves, but we just didn’t have enough offense to win it.”

Saint Mary-Tabor lost at traveled to Leavenworth Oct. 6 by an 8-0 score.

“This was our worst game of the year,” coach Lincoln Wulf said. “I think a lot of it was residual effects from last year, because those were two really tough teams and our guys just dreaded it all

Tabor women

Kansas Wesleyan-Tabor dropped a 3-0 decision to the Coyotes on Saturday.

“It’s the same story,” assistant coach Mike Zollinger said. “We just didn’t come out to play.”

The game hit halftime in a scoreless tie, but Wesleyan played with more inspiration in the second period. Zollinger said once his team is challenged, it tends to get less aggressive.

“It’s like once we see the other team is good, we stop playing,” he said. “We stop passing, stop going to the ball hard, and we back down.”

Sterling-The Bluejays beat the Warriors 6-0, Oct. 8, at Wiebe Field.

Kandi Holland scored three goals for Tabor while Michelle Rink, Kat Stagg and Porsche Davis each added one.

“We played a lot better this game,” assistant coach Mike Zollinger said. “We put our passes together much better and made our runs right and talked to each other. We came out to play.”

Goalkeeper Kari Shorb was credited with the shutout victory.

Saint Mary-Tabor lost to the Spires Oct. 6 by a 4-0 score. Saint Mary scored all four of its goals in the first half.

“That was one of those deals where we just didn’t show up to play,” said assistant coach Mike Zollinger.
