Lincolnville council denies P.O. request

The Lincolnville City Council met for its regular meeting Sept. 2.

After discussing a request for the city tractor and loader to level the flag pole and pull out the bushes at the post office, the council voted 3-1 to send a letter to Postmaster Roger Krause stating that because of liability, the city will not able to approve the request.

Scott Peterson asked the council to consider putting a skateboard park in the city park. The city agreed 4-0 to donate the concrete for an area 20 feet by 20 feet and labor to install the skateboard park if students raised money to build the ramps. City Clerk Jane Pigorsch will check with the city’s insurance company about guidelines and liability issues.

After Brian and Denise Klein presented drawings of possible signage, the council tabled making a final decision regarding placing “Welcome to Lincolnville” signs along U.S. Highway 77.

According to the sheriff’s report, two yield signs and one post have been stolen.

The council also heard several reports from city employees and standing committees, including the following:

— Joe Vinduska reported on repair of the merry-go-round board, completion of work on Adams Street, repair of the bank culvert, placement of posts on Seventh Street and work done at the burn site.

Vinduska said additional rock and culverts need to be ordered.

The council also discussed a property owner’s concern about a culvert on the property at 309 Adams was not replaced.

Sherri Pankratz said the city will act on the issue if the owner continues to “push the issue.”

— Steve Podszus reported cans have been placed by the basketball court.

— Evelyn Matz announced the meeting for senior citizens on Sept. 10.

— Parks and Recreation committee-According to the city clerk, the insurance company said the “Not Responsible for Accident” sign at the shelter house will cover the city.

— Streets committee-Pankratz thanked city employees for the work they’ve done and presented several requests for repairs and maintenance for the city.

In other business, the city took action on the following:

— approved unanimously taking down the west-end barricades on Seventh Street and placing a dead-end sign, and placing a road closed sign on the east end.

— voted unanimously to accept the deed presented that deeded the ground at 307 Main St. to the Marion County Fire District No. 5.

— authorized sending a letter to the dog owner whose dog has been running loose during the day.

— approved purchase of a fax machine not to exceed $235. At this time, the machine will be kept in the city clerk’s home.

— approved bid of $27,132.50 from Shilling construction to overlay the streets in Lincolnville.

— approved purchase of 20 tons of AB3 rock to rock pile and two 15-food metal culverts for stock.

— approved adding 10 percent to the work statement of $509.67 for work done by the city for the bank.

— approved purchase of pick-up truck for $800 from Marion AutoMart. Guidelines for the use of the pickup will be determined at the October meeting.
