The Hillsboro boys’ cross country team placed second at a tough Hesston Invitational meet Monday at the Hesston Golf Course.
The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was postponed because of rain.
Ellsworth won the boys’ division with 16 points.
Aaron Yoder led the Trojans with a second-place finish in the senior race with a time of 16 minutes, 45 seconds. Daniel Yoder finished fourth in that race in 17:03.
Also contributing to the boys’ team total were Sean Leihy, fourth in the freshman race at 18:13, Kody Borg, sixth in the junior race 18:16, and Karl Magnuson, seventh in the junior race in 18:30.
Also competing were, Ric Johnson, seventh in the sophomore race in 18:57; Daniel Bookless, ninth in the sophomore race in 19:13; Nate Holmes, 11th in the freshman race in 20:03; Robert Jost, 27th in the sophomore race in 21:02; Michael Bookless, 25th in the senior race in 19:45; Aaron Miller, 29th in the senior race in 20:09; Eric Weinbrenner, 41st in the junior race in 22:40; and Tyler Peachey, 43rd in the senior race in 22:19.
“It was especially good to see so much improvement in our fourth through 10th runners,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “Having that group continue to move closer to the Yoders is one of the keys to doing well as a team.”
For the girls, Mandy Estus was the top finisher at 24th in the freshman-sophomore race in a time of 14:12. Also running in that race were Elissa Richert, 61st in 15:31; Jacque Fisher, 74th in 16:23; and Melissa Hiebert, 82nd in 18:35.
Running in the junior-senior race was Sara Hamm, who placed 41st in 15:25.
The girls, as a team, finished 24th out of 34 teams.
Peabody-Burns won the girls division with six points. The Warriors top finishers were Jana Windsor, first in the junior-senior race in 12:44; Tiana McGee, second in the junior-senior race in 12:54; and Ashley Elliott, third in the freshman-sophomore race in 13:04.
Andrew Topham paced the Warrior boys with third place in the freshman race in 17:54. Also winning medals were Mirko Dechow, 16th in the junior race, and Nicholas Whitney, 19th in the junior race.
Also competing at Hesston were Goessel, Marion and Centre. Their results were not available at press time.
Coming-The Trojan boys will compete at the prestigious Rim Rock meet this Saturday in Lawrence.
“The competition will once again be very good, as it is another large meet,” Holmes said.
