Thirteen exchange students in county

Marion County families will play host to 13 foreign exchange students through the ERDT Share program during the 2003-2004 school year.

Area coordinators are Carol Duerksen and Maynard Knepp of Goessel.

Attending Goessel High School will be: Eric Urzowski of Germany, hosted by John and Jenny Fast; Inga Dexel of Germany, hosted by Darrel and Venita Schroeder; Hoi-Ki Ching of Hong Kong, hosted by Denny and Diane Kruger; You-Kyoung Jung of Korea, hosted by Dave and Deb Schrag; Radek Vit of the Czech Republic, hosted by Ron and Patsy Dirksen; Umrbek Olloqulov of Uzbekistan, hosted by Joe Smucker and Barb Goering; Pui-Shan Wong of Hong Kong, hosted by Maynard Knepp and Carol Duerksen

Attending Hillsboro High School will be: Hannah Baumert of Germany, hosted by Tom and Glenda Stoppel; Oleksandra Lytvynova of Ukraine, hosted by Gary and Sally Andrews.

Attending Marion High School will be Yoon-Jeong Lee of Korea, hosted by Ken and Teri Arnhold.

Attending Peabody-Burns High School will be: Mirko Dechow of Germany, hosted by Harlin and Doris Unruh; Miu-Sze Law of Hong Kong, hosted by Nancy McLeod; and Shuk-Kei Yuen of Hong Kong, hosted by Randy and Kate Wolf.

Burdick Labor Day plans are under way

The annual Burdick Labor Day celebration will be held Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 in Burdick.

The theme for the celebration is “Let Freedom Ring.” Many activities are planned for the event, such as arts and crafts booths, a co-recreational softball tournament, horseshoes, a fun run and a parade.

Concert features

gospel trio Aug. 17

Spring Valley Mennonite Church of rural Canton will sponsor an outdoor musical concert at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 17, at Springfield Park, located five miles north of Goessel on Kansas Highway 15.

The concert will feature Harmony, a trio of vocalists offering gospel music in a contemporary format. Members of the group are MaryAnne Talbott, Kara Amos and Eva Lindfors, all from Marquette.

Cottonwood Crossings, featuring Loren Ratzloff and Gail Jordan of Canton, will also perform in concert.

Those attending should bring lawn chairs for the gospel concert. Cold drinks will be provided.

The public is invited.

Emma Redger celebrates 99th

The Adolph Redger family requests a card shower for Emma Redger, who will be 99 on Aug. 9.

Redger is the daughter of Henry and Eva Koehn. She was formerly a homemaker in rural Tampa and now resides at Bethesda Home in Goessel.

McHomes schedules meeting Aug. 16

Marion County Home Educators will meet at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16.

The agenda will include an opportunity to discuss McHomes and answer home-educating questions.

Card shower request for Ruth Schroeder

A card shower is requested for Ruth (Penner) Schroeder, who will celebrate her 90th birthday Aug. 13.

Born in Hillsboro, she later married Kenneth Schroeder, who has passed away.

She has one daughter, Nancy Lucore and husband Don of Springfield, Mo., and three grandchildren.

Hillsboro MB Church holds eve of songs

Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church will hold the 18th session of an evening of inspirational singing and insights at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 10, in the chapel.

Participants from various Hillsboro congregations have been singing through the entire Mennonite Brethren Worship Hymnal.

The service will focus on conversion, new life in Christ and discipleship.

The next singing session is planned for Sunday, Aug. 24.

The public is invited.

Farmerette tour planned for Aug. 11

The Farmerettes are scheduled for a tour and will meet at 8:45 a.m., Monday, Aug. 11, at the Hillsboro Senior Center.
