given fitness grant

Hillsboro Community Medical Center and St. Luke Hospital of Marion recently received a grant through Wheat Plains Health Network.

The two local hospitals and Via Christi Regional Medical Center received $50,760 in grant support from the Kansas Rural Health Options Project to implement improvements in efforts to prevent obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure for residents in rural communities.

Residents of participating communities will be eligible to enroll before October for the grant services in a no-cost 32-week prevention-and-fitness program.

Information about the Healthy Fit program will be available during school enrollment in Marion and Hillsboro, and at HCMC and St. Luke hospital booths at the Marion County Fair.

Flower, garden entries for show due Aug.1

The Flower & Garden Show, held during Threshing Days, will accept entries on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Bethesda Home main activity area in Goessel.

Entries can be brought to the activity area from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Visitors are invited to view the show on Saturday and until 4 p.m. Sunday.

Classification sheets are available at Mid-Kansas Co-op Foods in Goessel.

Baize to be ordained

as deacon Aug. 5

John Baize will be ordained to the position of deacon during services beginning with Orthros at 6 p.m. and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Christian Church, 116 N. Washington.

The Right Rev. Bishop Basil from Wichita and area priests of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church will take part in the ordination.

Refreshments and fellowship will follow the service.

Goessel enrollment set for Aug. 11 & 12

Goessel USD 411 school enrollment will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 11 and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Kindergarten through six grade will enroll at the grade school, and seven through 12 will enroll at the Jr./Sr. high school.

The first day of school will begin at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20.

School supply lists are available at the Mid-Kansas Co-op grocery store or at the nearest discount store in the area.

Veterans’ service rep

to visit Aug. 5, 19

Richard Haywood, veterans’ service representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans’ Affairs, is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5 and 19, at the Marion County Health Department.

Any veteran, their dependents or survivors, who have received an Eligibility-Verification Report form or any inquiry from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, should contact Haywood for assistance.

Community band

to perform Aug. 6

The Hillsboro Community Band will perform at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, in the pavilion on the Marion County Fair grounds.

The band will follow the Kansas Mennonite Men’s Choir performance.

County 4-H club holds fun show

The Marion County Wide 4-H Horse Project held a fun show on June 28 at the Hillsboro Rodeo Arena.

Ribbons and prizes were awarded at the end of the event.

“A special thank you to the businesses that sponsored the event and donated the prizes,” organizers said.

Quilt guild to meet

Aug. 4 in Hillsboro

The Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4, at Hillsboro United Methodist Church.

Deb Nikkel of Hutchinson will present a program on scrap quilts, machine quilting and machine applique. She will also have a trunk show of her personal quilt collection.

Visitors are welcome to attend the presentation.

Marion Manor sets meeting Aug. 7

Marion Manor will hold an advisory-council meeting at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the solarium at Marion Manor, 1500 E. Lawrence St.

Area participants in the McPherson County Fair were recently announced by the fair committee.

Listed in the Demo Derby competition were the following:

— Scott Schultz of Lehigh, fifth place.

Schultz was also awarded first place in the demo cars parade.
