Housing authority to hold July meeting

The Hillsboro Housing Authority will hold a public meeting at 7 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, at Grand Oaks Community Center in Hillsboro.

The meeting is scheduled to receive comments on the 2003 Annual Plan Update for the housing authority.

All documents are on display at the office of the housing authority located at 506 W. Grand. Hours are 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday and Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday.

HHS, HMS to hold Fine Arts Festival

The Hillsboro high school and middle school Fine Arts Festival will begin at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 15, at the high school.

The schedule of events is as follows:

Art exhibit, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the commons.

Middle-school vocal, 6:30 p.m., in the gymnasium.

Sixth-grade band, 7 p.m., in the gymnasium.

Middle-school band, 7:20 p.m., in the gymnasium.

High-school band, 7:50 p.m., in the gymnasium.

High-school vocal, 8:20 p.m., in the auditorium.

The public is invited.

Shane Ball receives PSU scholarships

Shane Ball, senior at Hillsboro High School, has been awarded scholarships for the fall academic semester at Pittsburg State University.

Ball was awarded the Harold Compton Scholarship, the Electronics Alumni Scholarship, the Academic Achievement Award and the Alumni Legacy.

His parents are Michael and Coleen Ball of Hillsboro.

He will be majoring in electronics engineering at PSU.

Area art on display at public library

Members of a painting group led by Letty Enns will display their oil and water-color paintings at an art exhibit at the Hillsboro Public Library this month.

Group members displaying their art work are Geneva Becker, Delores Funk, Jeanie Funk, Doris Guhr, Eloise Jost, Edith Rempel, Shirley Reusser, Nancy Kaufman and Letty Enns.

The public is invited.

MHS forensics team places 5th in state

The Marion High School Forensics Team placed fifth at the State Speech Champs competition on May 3 at East High School in Wichita.

Under the leadership of Janet Killough, the team competed against a field of 40 other schools.

Chelsea Arnhold and Briana Vogel broke into the top-12 semi-finals. Joe Svitak was the state champion in prose, and Justin Brookens placed second place in that division. Tim Schuler and Joe Svitak garnered second place in duet acting.

Additional team members included Megan Whitaker, Megan Helmstead, Trevor Jones, Stacey Bowman, Nikki Moody, Ive Eddy, Renae Lundgren, Amanda Steiner and Sarah Davidson.

“What I appreciate most about this team, besides their talent and their commitment, is their support for each other and for each team member’s success,” Killough said.

“They continually encourage excellency within the team.”

HHS class of 1948 to hold reunion

The Hillsboro High School class of 1948 will hold its 55th class reunion at 5 p.m., Friday, May 23, at Olde Town Restaurant in Hillsboro.

Organizers expect a total of about 32 graduates and spouses in attendance at the event.

Florence alumni plan reunion for May 24

The annual Florence Memorial High School Alumni Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 24, at the Florence gymnasium.

All Florence and Marion alumni, spouses, guests and former teachers are invited. Beginning with the class of 1933, representatives will be introduced in five-year intervals.

Organizers plan to announce the 2003 scholarship winner at the event.

Tickets for the banquet are $10.50 per person.

MCSEC board to meet May 19

The Marion County Special Education Cooperative Board of Directors will meet for its monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, May 19, in the MCSEC conference room at 302 W. Eighth in Florence.

Holy Family Parish holds church picnic

The Holy Family Parish School of Religion will hold its end-of-the-year party beginning with Mass at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, in the Marion County Lake hall.

A potluck picnic will follow at the lake.

Those attending are asked to bring a meat dish, side dish, table service and folding chairs.

The party will be canceled if there is inclement weather.

May 21 deadline for summer drama

Registration is still available for the Hillsboro Recreation Commission summer drama programs taking place in June.

The registration and payment deadline is Wednesday, May 21. Register at the elementary and middle school offices or by calling Lynn Just at 620-382-3805.

Students who have completed first through third grades will meet from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., June 9 through June 13, at the Hillsboro High School auditorium. Registration fee is $10 per student.

Students who have completed fourth through eighth grade will audition at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 3, in the HHS vocal room.

Camp will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., June 9 through June 13, in the HHS auditorium. A performance is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, June 13. Registration fee is $20 per student.
