Trojan tennis second at Circle

The Hillsboro tennis team placed second in a five-team field at the Circle Round-Robin Tournament Thursday at Towanda.

The home team won the tournament with 29 points, followed by Hillsboro with 27, Valley Center with 21, Haven with 19 and Nickerson with 0.

Trojan senior Brandon Ratzlaff placed first in No. 1 singles with a 4-0 record. He defeated Jeremy Jones of Circle, 8-2, Valley Center’s Trenton Albrecht by forfeit, Ricky Snyder of Haven, 8-2, and Shawn Sullivan of Nickerson, 8-1.

The Trojans’ No. 1 doubles team of Caleb Dirks and Florin Nae placed second with a 3-1 mark. The pair defeated the team from Haven, 8-3, the team from Nickerson, 8-1, and the team from Valley Center, 8-7 (7-3). They lost to the team from Circle, 3-8.

Hillsboro No. 2 doubles team of Wade Kimbrel and Macy Fadenrecht finished third at 2-2. The pair opened with a loss to Valley Center, 3-8, then rallied to beat Haven, 8-2, and Nickerson, 8-0, before losing to Circle, 2-8.

Kyle Kroeker was 1-3 in No. 2 singles. He defeated Allen Denny of Nickerson, 8-5, then lost to Andrew Kuttler of Circle, 3-8, Sasha Manes of Valley Center, 1-8, and Kevin Montisano of Haven, 1-8.

The Trojans’ next action is scheduled for Tuesday at the Hesston Invitational. Matches begin at 3 p.m.
