Coach Jim Moore and his Tabor College softball team traveled to Kansas City to participate in the two-day Avila Tournament over spring break, and found the going tough, losing four of five games.

“The first day went well for us, and the second day, we had a couple girls sick, so things didn’t go quite as well as we wanted them to go,” Moore said.

Game one matched Tabor with the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. USA jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Tabor rallied to tie the game 3-3 going into the bottom of the fourth.

USA scored one additional run in the bottom of the fourth, and held on for the 4-3 win.

Jennie Ewertt (5-3) pitched well, but took the loss.

Tabor out-hit USA six to five, while both teams committed two errors.

In game two, Tabor defeated Mount Mercy, 4-1. Tabor struck early, taking a 2-0 lead after one inning and then stretched the lead to 4-0 after three innings.

Mount Mercy managed one run in the bottom of the fourth, but Johanna Love (5-3) thwarted the comeback.

Love allowed five hits, while Tabor racked up eight and played errorless ball.

On Saturday, weather conditions were miserable, with a cold wind blowing.

The Bluejays began the day playing losing to KCAC rival Bethany, 11-1. The Swedes scored in every inning and collected eight hits. Tabor managed only three hits.

Priscilla Mace (2-3) took the loss against the hot-hitting Swedes.

Following Bethany, Tabor took on the host team, and dropped a 10-2 decision.

Avila scored three runs in each of the first three innings to take command of the contest.

Johannah Love (5-4) took the loss. Avila pounded out 10 hits, while Tabor managed just four. Erin Loewen belted two triples for Tabor.

Tabor concluded the weekend by losing to Grand View College, 10-2. Sarah Frick (2-2) was the losing pitcher.

Grand View pummeled Tabor pitching for 13 hits while the Bluejays managed only two.

With the 1-4 weekend, Tabor’s season record stands at 14-12.

“It was a good weekend for us to come back off of break and play some teams like that,” Moore said. “I think it’ll be helpful for us heading into conference play.”

Next action for the Bluejays will be at home against Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday. Games will begin at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tabor will then play host to Saint Mary on Saturday. Those games will begin at noon and 2 p.m.
