Remembering the troops

As an expression of their concern for American soldiers fighting in the Iraqi war, about 45 students in the three third-grade classes at Marion Elementary School tied yellow ribbons in the downtown areas of Florence and Marion Friday afternoon.

“We want to see the soldiers come back and to come back safe,” said Leah James, one of the class members.

The children each contributed $1 toward purchasing the 20 rolls of yellow ribbons, said teacher Julia Trapp.

“They thought it was very awesome,’ Trapp said of the students’ response to the activity. She said the teachers hope watching the news about the war and then responding in this way could help their students deal with the events in Iraq.
