Seven HHS Trojans receive All-MCAA recognition for 2002-03

Four members of the Hillsboro High School boys’ team and three members of the girls’ team received all-league recognition by the coaches of the Mid-Central Activities Association.

For the boys, seniors Andy Brubacher and Tyler Weinbrenner were unanimous choices for the first team while senior Dustin Jost and junior Tyler Peachey received honorable mention.

For the girls, April Funk, the Trojans’ lone senior, was named to the first team while sophomore Charity Davis and junior Katie Fast received honorable mention.

Brubacher and Weinbrenner were among five players to receive a unanimous ballot. The others were Jordan Regehr of Halstead, Brandon Krinhop of Smoky Valley and Ben Hawley of Wichita Collegiate.

Brubacher, a 5-feet-10-inch guard, averaged 10.2 points a game for the 23-3 Trojans, shooting 49.4 percent from the floor (41.4 percent from behind the arc) and a team-high 79.5 percent from the free-throw line. He also averaged 2.5 steals and 3.5 assists while committing only 1.2 turnovers per game.

Weinbrenner, a 5-9 guard, was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 14.5 points a game. He shot 39.7 percent from the floor (27.5 percent from behind the arc) and 60.4 percent from the line. He averaged 1.8 steals and 3.5 assists while committing 2.8 turnovers per game.

Jost, a 5-10 guard, averaged 10 points a game on 46.9 percent shooting from the floor (32.9 percent from behind the arc) and 49.2 percent from the line. He averaged 2.5 steals and 2.9 assists while committing 2.8 turnovers per game.

Peachey came off the bench to average 8.9 points a game. The 6-2 post-forward shot 47.2 from the floor (26.9 percent from 3-point range) and 73.7 percent from the line. He pulled down a team-high 170 rebounds (6.5 per game) and averaged 1.5 steals and 1.7 turnovers.

Five girls were unanimous picks for the MCAA first team: Keri Wise of Ellinwood, Lindsey Miles of Halstead, Kristin Frey of Hesston, and Sierra Radke and Andrea Leiker of Lyons.

Funk, a 5-5 guard, led the 8-13 Trojans in scoring at 9.6 points per game. She shot 43.5 percent from the field (31.0 percent from 3-point range) and 64.4 percent from the free-throw line. She averaged 1.7 steals, 2.6 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.6 turnovers per game.

Davis, a 5-6 guard-forward, averaged 6.9 points a game, shooting 40.7 percent from the floor (32.6 percent from behind the arc) and 48.5 percent from the line. She also averaged 2.2 steals, 2.1 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 turnovers.

Fast, a 6-1 post, averaged 9.1 points a game, shooting 49.7 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the line. She also averaged 7.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Fast’s 79 blocked shots (3.8 a game) set a new school record.
