EDITORIAL: Reasons for hope

It’s easy to become discouraged when you consider the state of our world. The daily news is rife with dire pronouncements and gloomy predictions. The human condition seems terminal, and the future is uncertain at best.

But we find reason for hope in the examples set by so many young people in our communities. In recent weeks we’ve written about some outstanding students involved in “arts and activities” at Hillsboro and Marion high schools; profiles of more will follow in the coming weeks.

In this issue you can read about some young men who refused to give up even in the face of disappointment and setbacks. A number of those young men play for a local high school basketball team. And one very special young man from Marion became an Eagle Scout against great odds.

Reasons for pessimism abound. But courage and hope are closer than we think. -DR
