Trojans humble Humboldt in state opener

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dustin Jost lifted the Hillsboro boys from an early 9-5 deficit and gave them a lead they never relinquished as the Trojans dominated the Humboldt Cubs, 62-38, in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament in Hutchinson Thursday afternoon.

Jost’s double 3s came midway through the first quarter. By the end of the period, the Trojans were leading 19-12.

Midway through the second period, Hillsboro caught fire again behind the arc, getting consecutive 3s from Jost, Andy Brubacher and Caleb Marsh over a 51-second span to move from a 24-17 lead to a 33-17 margin. By halftime the score was 36-21.

The two teams played pretty evenly in the third quarter, but Hillsboro took a 16-point lead, 52-36, into the final frame. Hillsboro ran some clock, kept Humboldt off the scoreboard with only two points in the final eight minutes, and waltzed to the win.

Jost led a balanced Hillsboro attack with 15 points. Brubacher added 12 and Tyler Weinbrenner and Tyler Peachey 10 each.

Hillsboro, now 22-2, will play the winner of the Medicine Lodge and Immaculata game at 4:45 p.m., Friday, in the semifinal round.

Hillsboro schools will let out at 2 p.m. for the game.
