Goessel’s season endsin sub-state semifinals

The Goessel boys’ season came to an abrupt end Friday night in the semifinals of the Class 1A sub-state tournament at Clay Center.

Pike Valley connected on a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to defeat the Bluebirds, 65-62.

Goessel trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Pike Valley expanded its lead to 15, 32-17, midway through the second quarter. But Goessel began a comeback and whittled the lead to seven, 35-28, at the half.

Goessel came out strong in the third quarter and tied the game, 39-39, with 4:45 left in the quarter.

It was a battle from that point on. Neither team was able to manufacture more than a three-point lead throughout the final 12 minutes of the game.

Kent Peters paced the Bluebirds with 18 points, followed by Jeremy Voth with 17 and Clinton Plenert 16.

The loss ended the Bluebird’s season with a record of 17-6.
