ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro Trojans took the lead early on and held off every Hesston charge to take a 57-48 victory over the Swathers at Hesston.

Hillsboro battled to a 16-12 lead after one quarter, Hesston came back with a 6-2 run, thanks to 1-for-10 shooting by Hillsboro, to tie the game at 18 with 3:40 left in the half, but Hillsboro caught fire for a 10-2 run of its own and a 30-20 lead by intermission. Tyler Peachey hit a 3-pointer, Shawn Hughbanks added a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer and Andy Brubacher scored off a steal to fuel the run.

Five unanswered points by Dustin Jost to start the third quarter pushed Hillsboro’s led to 15. The lead then flucuated around the 10-point mark until the end of the quarter, when Hillsboro led, 47-36.

The Trojans got a big boost in the final period when Hesston coach Ty Rhodes got slapped with a technical after a foul was called against his team. Brubacher sank all four free throws to give Hillsboro a 51-38 lead with 6:20 to play.

Hesston pulled to within 53-46 on a 3-pointer by Dustin Klassen with 2:07 to play, but the Trojans made enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Brubacher scored 15 and Peachey 14 to pace the Trojans, who are now 21-2 and will likely be the No. 2 seed at Hutchinson. for Thursday’s opener.
