Hillsboro in sub-state finals with win over Marion

Hillsboro moved one victory away from a berth in the state tournament Friday with a 52-41 win over Marion in the semifinals of the Hesston sub-state tournament.

Even though Hillsboro had handled Marion twice earlier in the season, the Warriors came out playing hard and made a good game of it through the first half.

Hillsboro came from a 7-0 deficit at the start to slip in front at the end of the first quarter, 11-9. The battle continued through the second quarter, but Hillsboro managed to extend the lead to 24-19 by intermission.

HIllsboro stepped up its defensive pressure in the third quarter to push the lead to 39-25 by quarter’s end. Dustin Jost then hit three consecutive baskets for Hillsboro to start the final quarter and boost the margin to 18 points at 45-27. with 5:42 to play. The Warriors hit a couple of late 3s to close the margin.

Jost led the way for Hillsboro with 21 points and was the only Trojan to break double figures. Brian Bina scored 10 to pace the Warriors, who finish the season at 11-11.

With the win, the Trojans move to 20-2 and will play Hesston in the finals of the tournament , which starts at 8 p.m. Saturday.
