Trojan boysseeded No. 1

The Hillsboro boys’ team was scheduled to open sub-state play Tuesday against Ellsworth (2-18) at Brown Gymnasium.

The Trojans came into sub-state with a No. 1 seed by virtue of their 18-2 record. Hillsboro closed out the regular season last Tuesday with a 69-57 win over Haven.

A full report of the Ellsworth game will appear in this week’s issue of the Hillsboro Free Press Extra, on newsstands late Thursday afternoon.

Hillsboro is one of only three teams in the eight-team sub-state field to own a winning record, but coach Darrel Knoll is taking nothing for granted-especially since one of those teams is Hesston, who comes in at 15-5 and beat the Trojans earlier this season.

“Starting next Tuesday, we’ve got to come out and play like we really want to win,” Knoll said. “I told the guys that no matter what now, as along we give our best effort and walk off the court knowing we tried our hardest, that’s going to be good enough.

“Hopefully, that will be good enough for a state championship. But we have a tough sub-state and we just hope we can play to our potential and get out of it.”

If HHS defeated Ellsworth, the Trojans will play the winner of the Lyons-Marion game on Friday at Hesston.
