Hillsboro girls end season at Lyons

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
For the third time this season, the Hillsboro girls proved they have the capability to beat a strong Lyons team, but for the third time this season it was Lyons who came away with the victory.

This loss to the Lions was a season killer because this time it came duing sub-state play.

Lyons won on their home court, 42-35, but this game was even closer than the score would indicate. With a combination of good defense and cool shooting on both sides, the Lions crawled to a 4-3 lead after one quarter. By halftime, they had extended the lead to 11-7.

Lyons lead by as much as eight, 19-11 with 4:31 left in the third quarter, but Hillsboro came back an 11-2 run to take a 22-21 lead after three quarters.

In the final period, the Trojans, who mysteriously got into foul trouble after being called for only five fouls in the entire first half, saw the Lions shoot 16 free throws in the final period and make 12 to regain control of the game down the stretch.

Emily Ratzlaff led the Trojans with 10 points, including two 3-pointers and 4-for-4 shooting at the line. April Funk, playing her last game in a Trojan uniform, scored eight points.

The loss completes Hillsboro’s season with an 8-13 mark.
