Hillsboro and Marion wrestling teams each qualified four athletes for the Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament next weekend in Hays.

As a team, the Trojans placed seventh and Marion fifth in the 19-team field at this weekend’s regional tournament at Chase County High School.

Qualifying for their third straight state appearance were Hillsboro senior James Bina, who finished second at 160 pounds, and junior Daniel Yoder, who placed second at 140 pounds.

Junior Ryan Janzen qualified for his second consecutive state berth with a second-place finish at 119 pounds while junior Tim Glahn qualified for the first time by placing fourth at 145 pounds.

“I thought the guys did a good job,” coach Corey Burton said. “We had three qualify for the finals, which is a first for this season.

“James and Danny were seeded second in their weight class going in, so they took care of business like they needed to, and Ryan and Tim did a good job, too. Tim had a big win over an opponent who had beaten him earlier in the season to get into the medal round.

“I was pleased with how things went.”

Steven Boone heads the list of state qualifiers for Marion by earning a berth at Hays for the third straight year. The junior placed third at 171 pounds.

Chelsea Arnhold, one of only three girls to qualify for state last year, will make her second appearance in two years. The sophomore placed fourth at 103 pounds.

Zac Ewert earned his first state berth as a senior by placing third at 135 pounds.

Junior Jordan Trapp also qualified for the first time, finishing third at 140 pounds.
