Trojans end regular season with a split against Haven

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Trojans ended their regular season with what has become a familiar pattern in the past few games — the girls came out on the short end of a 41-28 score against Haven, while the boys won, 69-57.

Haven slowly took control of the girls game, leading 9-7 after one quarter, 22-17 at the half and then 30-21 after three quarters. Hillsboro played good defense but simply could not get their shots to fall in the second half, going 2-for-23 from the floor.

Unofficially, Katie Fast scored 11 points to lead Hillsboro while Emily Ratzlaff added nine.

The boys, meanwhile, jumped to an early lead, 24-11 after one quarter. In the second quarter, they extended it to 18 points with five quick points, but by halftme the margin was back down to 11, 37-26.

Once again, the Trojans got off to a good start in the third quarter, and enjoyed a 21-point lead with 1:23 left in that period. The margin was down to 19 at the end of the quarter and got as close as 12 a couple of times, but HHS held on for the win.

Tyler Weinbrenner scored 23, Steven Chisholm 16 and Dustin Jost 10 for Hillsboro, which improved to 18-2 for the year.

Although the official pairings have not been released, it appears the boys will be the No. 1 seed at Hesston and will take on 3-16 Ellsworth Tuesday at Brown Gymnasium.

The girls, one of only two teams with a losing record in the seven-team field, will likely play at Lyons on Monday.
