David F. Loewen, 80

David F. Loewen, 80, former Hesston Corp. employee, died Feb. 13 at Hillsboro Community Medical Center.

The funeral was Feb. 18 at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro with pastor Tim Sullivan officiating. Burial was at Springfield Cemetery in rural Hillsboro.

He was born March 18, 1922, to Abraham S. and Elizabeth (Fast) Loewen in rural Hillsboro. On Aug. 14, 1970, he was married to Alyce Faul, who survives.

He is also survived by two brothers, Peter F. Loewen of rural Hillsboro and Albert F. Loewen of North Newton, and two sisters, Martha Loewen of rural Hillsboro and Hulda Loewen of Wichita.

A memorial was established with Parkview Church Missions.

Jesse Goldsmith, 86

Jesse Wayne Goldsmith, 86, retired teacher and coach, died Feb. 12 at Newman Hospital in Emporia.

Memorial services and burial will take place at a later date.

He was born March 27, 1916, to Jesse Lee and Mary (Hallene) Goldsmith in Melvern. On Sept. 17, 1940, he was married to Margaret Eleanor Clayton, who survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Jerry Lee Goldsmith and wife Sheila of Savannah, Ga., and David Dean Goldsmith and wife Ina of Americus; two sisters, Naomi Catlin of Melvern and Harriet Menenly of Quenemo; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established as the Goldsmith Scholarship Fund at Emporia State University in care of the Memorial Chapel of the Flint Hills in Council Grove.

Pauline Makovec, 87

Pauline Makovec, 87, former waitress in Durham and Lincolnville, died Feb. 10 at St. Luke Hospital in Marion.

The funeral was Feb. 14 at Holy Family Parish St. John Nepomucene Church in Pilsen with Father Steve Gronert officiating. Burial was at the Pilsen Cemetery.

She was born Jan. 15, 1916, to Mathias and Eleanor (Neuwirth) Tajchman in rural Pilsen. On Oct. 26, 1938, she was married to Albert Makovec, who predeceased her in 1977.

She is survived by one son, Robert Makovec and wife Carol of Ramona; one daughter, Pat Martin and husband Sy of Mt. Hope; one sister, Sylvia Beving of Ackley, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Memorials have been established with Holy Family Parish St. John Nepomucene Church in Pilsen and the Pilsen Community Center.

Geraldine Berg, 59

Geraldine “Gerry” Berg, 59, former employee at IBP in Emporia and nurse aide in Marion and Hillsboro, died Feb. 14 in Marion.

The funeral was Feb. 17 at Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion with pastor Jane King officiating. Burial was at Marion Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 28, 1943, to Alfred J. “Junior” and Betty Jean (Meirowsky) Herzert in Florence. On Sept. 23, 1961, she was married to Don Berg, who survives.

She is also survived by two daughters, Donna Bernhardt and Brenda Dawson, both of Marion; one brother, Jim Herzet of Marion; one sister, Mary Ecker of Wichita; and five grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the Marion City Library.

Paul L. Rempel, 78

Paul L. Rempel, 78, retired laboratory manager for the Kansas State Artificial Breeding Service Unit, died Feb. 14 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 3, at the Manhattan Mennonite Church with Richard and Barbara Gehring officiating.

He was born March 8, 1924, to Jacob E. and Liese (Balzer) Rempel in Hillsboro. On June 1, 1951, he was married to Nellie Schmidt, who survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Don Rempel of St. Louis and Terry Rempel and wife Sara of Manhattan; four daughters, Laura Klocke and husband Richard of Lawrence, Trudy Rempel and husband Richard Schulz of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Lisa Rempel and husband Kevin Bertrandt of Gilbert, Ariz., and Audrey Hunter and husband Perry of Portland, Ore.

Additional survivors are one sister, Lula Klaassen and husband Herman of Newton; one brother-in-law, Clarence Unrau of North Newton; one sister-in-law, Frances Rempel of Hillsboro; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

John M. Kinney, 30

John M. Kinney, 30, welder, died Feb 16 in Wichita.
