Trojans split games in Lyons on Tuesday

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro basketball teams both played well Tuesday night against Lyons, but got very different results in very different games.

The Trojan girls came within a free throw of avenging a loss to Lyons earlier in the season, but when the game was on the line (literally), the Trojans missed… and missed… and missed. In all, they missed nine of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Lyons, which trailed by eight, 36-28, with 3:10 left in the game, came back to tie the score at 37-37 at the end of regulation, then went on to win in overtime, 46-41.

Katie Fast had 17 points and Emily Ratzlaff 10 for Hillsboro, which is now 7-9 on the season.

The boys, meanwhile, just blew the doors off the Lions’ gymnasium, going 11-for-14 from the field with six 3-pointers to take a 32-8 lead at the first break.

The Trojans never looked back — and never let up — on the way to an 80-43 mugging. The HHS shooting percentage fell a bit as the game progressed, but not the Trojans’ intensity on defense. HHS led 49-24 at halftime and 62-31 at the end of three quarters.

Coach Darrel Knoll cleared his bench with 5:03 to play with the score 72-36.

Andy Brubacher scored 20 to pace a well-balanced attack. Tyler Weinbrenner added 15, Dustin Jost 14 and Shawn Hughbanks, with his most productive night of the season, scored 12.

With the win, the Trojans are 14-2 on the season.
