Tabor College has received a Title II Improving Teacher Quality grant in the amount of $53,000 from the Kansas State Department of Education.

The announcement was made by Donna Bagley, associate professor of education and chair of the education department

The grant will enable Tabor to make progress in preparing to meet the KSDE and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education standards, according to Howard Keim, vice president of academic affairs.

“It will also give faculty the opportunity to work together on ways to enhance academic quality,” he said. “It is a great way for us to work together to improve all of our programs.”

Funds will support faculty-development efforts with syllabus revision and performance assessment over the next six months. Included in these efforts are faculty workshops to be held Feb. 7 and 8.

These workshops will help faculty determine common requirements for all syllabi as well as focus on improving student learning through the use of measurable objectives.

Mark McDonald, associate professor of biology and assistant dean for assessment at Bethany College, Lindsborg, will be the keynote speaker.

A second set of workshops will be held May 27 and 28, and will focus on performance assessment. Scheduled activities include two sessions to be led by Grant Wiggins, nationally known expert on performance assessment. Others will be designed for deans and chair of education departments to discuss leadership issues.

Another session, to be held at Botanica, will include faculty from Tabor as well as Bethany, Bethel, Southwestern and Sterling colleges.

After meeting, Tabor faculty will begin to work on incorporating performance into individual syllabi.
