The Hillsboro Middle School eighth-grade team came from behind in the final quarter Saturday and beat Reno Valley, 27-25, to win their first MCAA league tournament title.

The Trojans trailed 21-18 after three quarters, but outscored their opponents 9-4 in the final frame.

Hannah Marsh scored five points, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, while Tina Frick and JuliAnne Chisholm each added a basket.

Coach Mike Jilka said he and his assistant, Collette Burton, are proud of their squad, which finished 14-1 for the year.

“They worked hard all year and did everything we asked of them,” he said. “The hard work paid off.”

Marsh finished as the Trojans’ leading scorer against Reno Valley with 12 points. Chisholm added eight, Frick four and Chelsey Harmon three.

To make it to the title game, the Trojans beat Wichita Collegiate on Thursday, 37-20.

Megan Peachey led the Trojans with 13 points, Chisholm added 11, Marsh five, Jessica Heidel three, Harmon and Lora Andrews two and Frick one.

In their tournament opener Feb. 3, the Trojans handily defeated Haven, 45-18.

Chisholm led the scoring parade with 10 points. Marsh added eight, Heidel and Harmon six, Andrews and Peachey five, Sydney Waner three and Frick two.

“I am really going to miss these girls,” Jilka said. “They are a great bunch to work with, to coach and to be around. It will be fun to watch them play next year as they move forward to the next level of competition.”
