Trojans fall to Salina South in SES tourney championship

The Hillsboro girls gave their best against Salina South, but on this night their best just wasn’t enough as the Class 5A Cougars defeated HIllsboro, 39-21, to win the championship game of the Southeast of Saline Invitational on Friday.

The Trojans led the Cougars, 4-2, after the first quarter on the strength of a patient offensive attack and a strong defensive effort that contributed to 1-for-9 shooting by South.

HHS still led, 11-9, with two minutes to go in the first half, but Salina got a 3-pointer from its star guard, Betsy Wilson, and a traditional 3-point play by Whitney Engle to grab a 15-11 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Trojans, coming off a physically and emotionally draining win against the host team the previous evening, seemed to battle fatigue in addition to the Cougars. Salina launched a 7-0 run over the final 3:39 to stretch its lead to 25-15 by quarter’s end.

In the final quarter, the Cougar guards stepped up for four 3-pointers to take control of the contest and push the lead to the final 18-point spread.

Katie Fast scored eight points and Emily Ratzlaff seven to lead Hillsboro’s offensive production. The Trojans only put up 22 shots during the game and made 10. The Cougars were 13 of 42.

Fast and Charity Davis were named to the all-tournament team.

With the loss, the Trojans are 6-7 on the season.
