Trojan girls advance to the SES finals

With great shooting and solid defense, the Hillsboro girls upset the No. 1 seeded home team at the Southeast of Saline Invitational Thursday, 49-42.

The Trojans never trailed in this game. April Funk made the first two points of the game off a rebound and made the last two on a pair of critical free throws.

In between the Trojans displayed great patience and shot selection on offense, finishing the night with a 17-for-28 performance unofficially-nearly 61 percent.

Southeast, meanwhile, struggled from the field, finishing 17 for 60 (28 percent) — in part because of a smart defensive effort by the Trojans, but also some plain old cold shooting coupled with poor shot selection.

Hillsboro led 13-8 after one quarter and 24-21 at the half. They pushed the lead slightly to 34-30 heading into the final quarter.

From there the Trojans put up only two field goals and made one — but made a good living at the line, hitting 13 of 17. SES shot 4-for-20 down the stretch.

With the win, HHS will face off against either Abilene or Salina South at 8 p.m. Friday. HHS now stands at 6-6 for the year while SES dropped to 10-2.
