Dale Horst of rural Goessel will present “The Story of American Newspaper Illustrations” at 3:30 p.m., Jan. 12 for the next Sunday-Afternoon-at-the-Museum program at Kauffman Museum in North Newton.

Admission to the program is free and open to the public.

Using PowerPoint to illustrate his lecture, Dale Horst will discuss the history of wood engraving, particularly in relation to newspaper illustrations, the transition to photoengraving and the implications of that technological change for the artists.

He will also share suggestions for collecting illustrations.

Horst and his wife, Rosie, were guest curators of the museum’s current exhibition “Scenes of Christmas,” which shows holiday celebrations as depicted in newspapers during the Victorian era. The exhibit runs through Jan. 19.

“I’m looking forward to this program because Dale’s study of Victorian newspaper illustrations gives us a peek into life in the United States a century ago,” said Rachel Pannabecker, museum director. “Through illustrations like the ones in this exhibit, we learn more about the antiques in our collections.”

Kauffman Museum is located at 27th and North Main on the Bethel College campus in North Newton.

For information, contact Pannabecker at 316-283-1612.
