The HHS boys got off to a blazing start, but ran out of fire power in the final minutes, losing to Salina Central, 49-42 Friday night at Brown Gymnasium.

The Trojans hit their first four shots — all 3-pointers — and ended the quarter with six 3-pointers and a 20-12 lead. HHS hit just one of eight shots in the second quarter, enabling the Mustangs to take a 25-24 lead at intermission.

The Trojans trailed 35-33 going into the final frame, and took a brief 42-41 lead with 2:31 to play, but the Trojans missed their last eight shots from the floor as Salina secured the win.

Tyler Weinbrenner and Dustin Jost each had 11 points for the Trojans. With the loss, HHS drops to 3-2 on the season.

The Trojan girls, meanwhile, trailed 14-8 after one quarter and never could dig themselves out out of the hole, losing to SC 41-31. The Trojans trailed by 10 at the half, came out more aggressive defensively in the third quarter and pulled to within six, 31-25 by quarter’s end.

A bucket by April Funk with 7:19 left in the game pulled HHS to within four, 31-27, but the Mustangs fought off the rally and returned the margin to 10 points on a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Funk finished with 12 points for HHS, which dropped to 2-3.
