‘Sewer cam’ new inspection tool

One of the professionals who might be called upon to diagnose a specific problem is Total Home Repair and Appliance in Hillsboro. Last summer they added a new tool to their arsenal: a sewer camera.

According to office manager Joy Dalke, the sewer camera looks like a camera attached to an air hose and is snaked through the sewer pipe.

The video display is separate, and the operator and the customer can watch a screen as the camera goes through the line.

“It gives a better idea when people have backup problems of what the blockage is,” Dalke said.

“It helps us to be able to tell exactly how much line needs to be replaced and what condition the line is in.”

The line has a locator on it, so workers can tell exactly where the problem is located. This results in more precise digging.

“It’s very accurate,” Dalke said.

Currently, the sewer camera is being used primarily to diagnose and locate problems. But Dalke said they hope people will begin considering this service when they buy houses so they will not be unpleasantly surprised by sewer problems after they move in.
