EDITORIAL: Feel no pain?

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
It will be interesting to hear how the court rules on a lawsuit to be filed by the League of Kansas Municipalities that will challenge Gov. Bill Graves’ decision to reduce state funding that has already been approved for city and county governments. The lawsuit will contend that only the legislature can “undo” budget legislation it has approved. Presumably, LKM figures that if the governor can be stopped from making those cuts, legislators will not pick up the axe on their own, given the intense lobbying they can expect from local government bodies within their districts.

A couple of thoughts….

One, we don’t know how the state will solve its budget crisis, but we assume it will take a combination of higher taxes and lower expenditures. No offense, Governor-elect Sebelius, but you aren’t going to find that much waste in your audit of state government.

Two, every budget cut is a good idea-unless it affects me and my pet programs. The schools screamed first, now the cities and counties add their voice.

Hey, one way or the other, all us will have to do with less before this crisis is over. Get used to the pain. -DR
