Area athletes receive media attention for state football

Several area athletes, including five Hillsboro Trojans, were listed among the all-state football selections for 2002 in the Wichita Eagle and Hutchinson News.

All but one received “honorable mention” status.

In Class 3A, the Eagle picked Hillsboro’s Tyler Marsh as an honorable-mention pick at end and as a defensive back, Dustin Jost at quarterback for the second year, James Bina at defensive line, Graham Ratzlaff at linebacker and Alan Yoder at running back.

The Hutchinson News picked Jost, Bina, Ratzlaff and Yoder for honorable mention.

Marion’s Jason Matz was the only area athlete to crack a first-team roster. The senior was picked as a defensive back in Class 3A by the Wichita Eagle.

Two other Warriors received honorable mention by the Eagle: Alan Vogel at both offensive and defensive lineman, and Steven Boone at running back.

The News picked Matz, Tyler Smith, Versch and Vogel for honorable mention.

Two Eagles from Canton-Galva received honorable mention for Class 2-1A from the Wichita Eagle: Shelby Hoppes at end, and Travis Regehr at quarterback.

The News picked Hoppes, Regehr and linebacker Seth Shaw for honorable mention.

Peabody-Burns’ Adam Jones received honorable mention from the Wichita Eagle as an offensive lineman.

The News picked Chris Hamm, Nolan Hurst and Phillip Unruh for honorable mention.

Centre’s Todd Stahlecker received honorable mention from the Eagle as an end for 8-man football.
