Undefeated teams drop first games

Two middle school volleyball teams fell from the undefeated ranks Thursday when teams from Hillsboro and Wichita Collegiate hooked up.

The HMS eighth-grade team gave the Spartans their first loss of the season, 15-12, 15-1. Chelsey Harmon and Jessica Neufeld each served for 9 points to lead HMS (4-2). Sierra Langley added 4 points, Hannah Marsh 3, Megan Peachey 2 and Lora Andrews 1.

“This was a very exciting win for the eighth-grade team,” coach Stephanie Sinclair said.

The HMS seventh-grade team, meanwhile, tasted defeat for the first time this season, losing to Collegiate, 4-15, 4-15.

“This was a very tough first loss but a valuable learning experience,’ Sinclair said. “Collegiate had a total of eight players, so we played a mostly varsity team.

Courtney Fast and Amy Neufeld each served for 2 points for HMS (8-1), while Amanda Faber, Bobbi Jo Carlson, Amber Loewen and Amanda Bina served for 1.

7th-grade tournament-The seventh-grade team won all three matches at a tournament in Lyons Oct. 7. The Trojans defeated Lyons, 15-6, 15-7, Ellinwood, 15-13, 15-12, and Sterling, 15-11, 15-9.

For the evening, Janissa Klose served for 14 points, Suzy Lindsay 12, Jessica Klose 11, Amanda Bina 10, Courtney Fast 9, Lauren Just 7, Bobbi Jo Carlson 6, Audrey Weinbrenner and Chelsea Bebermeyer 5, Amy Neufeld 4, Amanda Faber 3, and Greta Wiebe and Jandi Nikkel 1.
