EDITORIAL: New ideas are lifeblood

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Saturday’s Hillsboro Arts & Crafts Fair proved again that doing something new can turn out well…and not so well. For instance, to allow Friday-night set-up was seen by some as a bold and difficult decision when it was made about a year ago. On its test run this weekend, it appears to have been a tremendously successful idea for all concerned. It just took courage to take the lead.

On the other hand, the Hillsboro Convention & Visitors Bureau’s idea to provide a hangout for “non-shoppers” (read “men”) got off to a slow start. One humbled organizer asked that the number of patrons not be reported. Let’s just say those patrons could have driven off together quite comfortably in a Volkswagen Beetle.

Here’s the point: New ideas are a lifeblood for any community and any cause. “We’ve never done it that way before” is the death knell of progress. Sure, ideas need to be thought through as clearly as possible, but if we don’t risk failure, we won’t make progress.

Even “bad” ideas can lead us to good results…eventually. Don’t give up thinking and trying. -DR
