Tourney title big step in Warriors’ growth

From the time that Marion volleyball coach Ginger Robert stepped into her role, the Warriors have been changing things for the better.

On Saturday, Marion silenced nay-sayers and skeptics by going undefeated at the Centre Invitational Volleyball Tournament and taking home the championship trophy with a 15-5, 17-15 win over Herington in the title match.

Robert said her team played well during the tournament.

“It felt really good,” Robert said. “Everything clicked and came together. Win or lose the tournament, I would have been happy with our performance.”

The Warriors started a little shaky in their pool-play opener, allowing Council Grove to take them to three sets before Marion won, 15-10, 13-15, 15-11.

In their second match, Marion defeated Berean Academy 15-0, 15-8. The Warriors then defeated Hope, 15-12, 15-7, to win their pool and advance to the semifinals against Hillsboro.

The Trojans proved to be little match for Marion, who grabbed a 15-9, 15-4 win. MHS then jumped on the Railers in the championship game to win the title.

Junior Brandi Peterie was named to the all-tournament team.

Trinity Academy-Marion took care of business last Tuesday against Trinity Academy, but it took three games in each match to do it.

Marion defeated the Wichita team 15-7, 10-15, 15-9 in the first match and 15-7, 7-15, 15-5 in the final match.

Coming-Marion took an 8-2 record to Chase County yesterday to battle the Bulldogs in a Cottonwood Valley League matchup.

Marion will play host to Herington in a rematch of the Centre Invitational championship game Sept. 24. The first match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
