EDITORIAL: Community pride

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
Hillsboro and Marion are about to put out the welcome mat again Saturday for 30,000 to 50,000 of their closest friends from across Kansas-and beyond, for that matter.

The Hillsboro Arts & Crafts Fair and Marion’s Art in the Park are remarkable events from a variety of perspectives. For one, organizers who put their backs to the load year after year deserve our respect and affirmation for undertaking an enormous project that doesn’t benefit them much personally-except for taking pride in a job well done.

Another remarkable story are the many volunteers who give of their time and energy to make these events successful. Again, community pride is about the only compensation they desire.

Love them or hate them, these art fairs may be the most significant thing we do together en masse. It’s a lot of work, but most good things are. -DR
