Noah Krol’s 20 -yard field goal with 3:03 left in the game capped a gutty 15-play, 73-yard drive and gave the Panthers a 9-7 win over Hillsboro Friday night in Nickerson.
The Trojans had taken a 7-6 lead with 2:17 left in the third quarter on a nifty 19-yard zig-zag run by Caleb Marsh, who also kicked the extra point that put Hillsboro ahead.
After the two teams traded possessions, Nickerson took over on its own 27-yard line and drove all the way to the Trojan 3-yard line before the defense stiffened and forced the field-goal attempt, which Krol nailed easily.
The Trojans had one last possession, but couldn’t overcome two holding penalties, both of which occurred on long-gain plays by the offense. Hillsboro finally ran out of downs at its own 40-yard line wiith 1:02 to play.
With the loss, HIllsboro drops to 1-1 while the win pushes Nickerson to 2-0.
