Goessel 40, Wilson 0

Goessel quarterback Ben Schmidt sparked a 30-point first-quarter explosion with three rushing touchdowns to lead the Bluebirds to a convincing season-opening win over Wilson Friday in Goessel.

Schmidt scored on runs of six, 42 and one yards in a decisive 30-point first quarter. The senior also ran for a two-point conversion after his first score.

Aaron Stehman and Dylan Buller ran for the two-point score after Schmidt’s second and third touchdowns, respectively.

Buller added Goessel’s fourth touchdown of the quarter on a seven-yard run, but the Birds were stopped on the two-point conversion run.

With the game all but decided, Goessel added a safety in the second quarter, then Stehman returned the second-half kickoff 75 yards for the final points of the evening.

The Bluebirds will travel to Chase on Friday. Chase lost to Udall in its opener, 42-36. Game time is 7 p.m.

Centre 54, BV Randolph 14

Curtis Gutch three for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth to pace Centre to a lopsided road win over Blue Valley-Randolph Friday night.

Gutsch hit Todd Stahlecker with a 53-yard pass with 7:29 left in the first quarter to start the scoring parade. Mark Pagenkopf added the extra point.

Gutsch scored from five yards out and tossed touchdown passes of 13 yard to Stahlecker and 12 yard to Kyle Luna in the second quarter.

Luna scored the Cougar’s only touchdown of the third quarter on a six-yard run, but Centre scored twice more in the final period-both times on kick off returns by Pagenkopf following Blue Valley touchdowns. The first return went for 71 yards and the second for 69 yards.

“We beat Blue-Valley Randolph on big plays,” said coach Bud Peterson. “We have to work hard to get our rushing game going.”

Luna picked up 52 of Centre’s 92 rushing yards. Gutsch completed 7-of-of 10 passes for 150 yards.

Peterson applauded the play of Gutsch, Stahlecker, Pagenkopf and center/defensive tackle Derek Belton, who finished with six tackles and four assists.

Centre will host St. Xavier (0-1) Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.

Inman 27, Canton-Galva 0

Inman’s Brad Lind ran for three touchdowns to lead the Teutons to a home-field win over Canton-Galva Friday.

Two of Lind’s scores came in the first quarter-the first from 17 yards out and the second on a 70-yard punt return. Sandwiched in between those scores was a safety by the Teuton defense.

With the Eagles trailing only 15-0 at half, Inman added a 14 yard run by Chris Benisch in the third quarter and a 34-yard run by Lind in the final quarter. Both point-after kicks failed.

Canton-Galva will try to find its first win of the season Friday when it travels to Ell-Saline for a game against fellow Heart of America school. The Cardinals clobbered Remington, 60-0, in their opener. Game time is 7 p.m.

Sterling 7, Peabody-Burns 6

Peabody-Burns lost a defensive battle to the Sterling Black Bears Friday night. Details of the game were not reported.

Peabody-Burns travels to Halstead (0-1) Friday to face its second Mid Central Activities Association foe of the season. Game time is 7 p.m.
