Red Cross schedules meeting for Sept. 17

The annual meeting of the American Red Cross Sunflower Chapter will be held at 7:15 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Hess Hall at the United Methodist Church in McPherson.

Blood donors, members and volunteers are invited.

Library needs books for annual Sept. sale

Hillsboro Public Library is accepting book donations for the annual book sale to be held Sept. 20 and Sept. 21.

Books that sell well include children’s books, Western books and cookbooks. The library does not accept old textbooks or any books with mold or mildew.

Donations will be accepted until Monday, Sept. 16.

Centre class of ’77 holds reunion

The Centre High School Class of 1977 celebrated its 25th class reunion Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.

Classmates attended the dinner theater “Death by Chocolate” on Saturday, a potluck at Marion Lake Hall and fireworks on Sunday, and the Burdick Labor Day Celebration on Monday.

Class members who gathered for the various weekend events with their families were Marcus Carlson, Jeff Deines, Teresa Hageberg, Steve Jirak, Debbie Kresky, Monica Leihy, Barry Montgomery, Larry Montgomery, John Nowak, Marvin Peterson, Mary Smith and Kathryn Thurlow.

Nansel to receive alumni award

Tonja Ranae Nansel has been selected by Fort Hays State University to receive the Outstanding Young Alumni award.

Nansel, a 1983 graduate of Hillsboro High School, will be honored at Fort Hays homecoming festivities in October.

She is the daughter of Bob and Betty Seibel of Hillsboro.

The award recognizes 10- to 15-year graduates for their professional and educational achievements, community activities, honors and awards since graduation.

Nansel earned a degree in nursing from Fort Hays in 1988, a master’s degree in psychology from Wichita State University in 1995, and a doctorate in community/clinical psychology from WSU in 1998.

She is an investigator for the Prevention Research Branch of the Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Md.

Solid-Waste Board to meet Sept. 18

The regular meeting of the Central Kansas Regional Solid Waste Authority Board will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, at McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility, 1431 17th Ave.

Board members representing Harvey, Marion and McPherson counties will be in attendance.

Agenda items include claims and invoices, Waste Recycling and Reduction Committee report, review and discussion of solid-waste management-plan changes, and manager’s report.

The meeting is open to the public.

MCRCC meets to elect officers

The Marion County Republican Central Committee met Aug. 30 at Hillsboro City Hall.

The agenda included nomination of officers and an update from State Rep. Don Dahl, who spoke on the legislature and upcoming election.

Precinct members in attendance were Carol Wiebe, Cleo beth Beth Friesen, Carole Spohn, Gary Spohn, L. Dena Goertz, Cy Goertz, Bob Hein, Don Stenzel, Roger W. Hannaford, Dollye Novak and Bill Novak.

Alpha Omega meets Sept. 7 in Peabody

The Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International met Sept. 7 at the Peabody Baptist Church.

The meeting was chaired by newly elected president Mildred E. Karnowski.

Hostesses were Sonja Koslowski, Mary Regier, Mary Wiens and Jan Terman.

A business meeting and work session were on the program.

The November meeting will celebrate Alpha Omega’s 50th anniversary, and Phi State President Lila Thayer will be present.
