Trojans tame Wildcats in season opener

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
Hillsboro almost let a brilliant third quarter go down the drain, but pulled themselves together enough down the stretch to beat Haven 31-20 in Friday’s season opener for both teams.

The Trojans broke into the scoring column first when Tyler Peachey picked off a pass by all-league quarterback Andy Meyer-who was hit as he tried to throw the ball-and raced 15 yards for a touchdown with 2:51 left in the opening quarter. The PAT kick failed and Hillsboro led 6-0.

In the second quarter, the Trojans took advantage of a Caleb Marsh interception of Meyer and scored with 2:17 left in the half when quarterback Dustin Jost hit Peachey with a 32-yard pass down the middle of the field. The 2-point conversion failed and the Trojans led 12-0.

Hillsboro almost let Haven score a last-second touchdown, but Meyer’s 33-yard pass to Jeremy Kocker left the Wildcats on the 2-yard line as time ran out.

The third quarter belonged to Hillsboro. The Trojans cashed in on an interception by Jones and marched 64 yards in seven plays with Alan Yoder scoring from the 1-yard line with 9:10 left in the quarter. The 2-point conversion failed again, but HHS led 18-0.

After Haven scored with 7:58 left in the quarter, Yoder dove into paydirt again from a yard out about three and a half minutes later, and Marsh added the extra point for a 25-6 Hillsboro advantage.

Marsh scored a TD with 1:56 left in the quarter on a 38-yard run around left end to make the score 31-6.

From there, the Trojans let up mentally, and Haven took advantage, scoring twice within the first three minutes of the final quarter to close the gap to 31-20 with 9:26 still to play. Key defensive plays by Dustin Jost and Brodie Unrau down the stretch kept Haven from stealing the victory away.

With the win, Hillsboro is 1-0.
