Peabody band performs first concert

A newly-formed Peabody Community Band played its first concert Aug. 25 at the Main Street Event in Santa Fe Park in Peabody. Professional whistler Robert Stemmons (left) of Jenks, Okla., joined the group for their performance. The 32-member band is directed by Virginia Skinner.

“Thanks to some wonderful high-school band directors over the past 50 years, Peabody has a long tradition of enthusiasm for band music,” Skinner said. “So it wasn’t difficult to find band members.”

High-school alumni included musicians from Hutchinson, Goessel, Burns, Newton, Salina and Lindsborg, who played a full complement of instruments. Some 20 to 25 more musicians have shown an interest in joining, Skinner said.

“Now that we’re off to such a good start, we’re planning to play often throughout the year, especially during the summer,” she said.

To join the band or for more information, call Skinner at 620-983-2246.
