ORIGINALLY WRITTEN CYNTHIA MARTENS
The Hillsboro Daylight Donut shop on West Grand has been sold, and the new owners, Katy and Kerry Magathan of Hillsboro, will officially open for business Tuesday, Aug. 20.
“When the doughnut shop closed, we missed it,” Katy said. “I called and talked to Vince Nikkel with Real Estate Center and found out how much it was and decided to look into it further.”
The shop will be open from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 20 to Aug. 24. A Daylight Donut representative will be on hand to work along side the couple.
After the first week, they will close the doors to prepare for a temporary schedule beginning Thursday, Aug. 29. At that time, store hours will be 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., Sunday.
The shop will be open Sunday for regular business and church orders. The Magathans are asking patrons to call in by Saturday to place church orders, Kerry said.
After the Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Fair, which is held the third Saturday in September, they plan to announce a permanent schedule.
The Magathans live in rural Hillsboro. Kerry works full time on the Boeing 777 at Boeing Co. in Wichita. Katy is a homemaker and a home-school teacher for the couple’s five children: Kai, 11, Sydney, 9, Maia, 7, Zachary, 5, and Ethan, 21/2.
“We wanted to do this to be a part of the community and have a family business,” Katy said.
Paul Epp, the owner of the building rented by the Magathans, is remodeling the entrance, Katy said.
The customer entrance on Grand originally had two doors. The west door has been permanently closed and filled in. The east door will swing outward and have a recessed entryway and wheelchair access.
The Magathans are adding new wall paneling on the lower half of the interior walls and sponge paint is planned for the upper half.
The couple plan to offer the same menu as the previous owner but will add a product-the Daylight Donut sausage roll.
Kerry will be making the fresh doughnuts each morning, and Katy plans to arrive about 5 a.m. to help.
“Eventually, we’d like to do lunch and maybe open up in the evenings for the college kids,” Katy said. “But that will be on down the line.”
The Magathans kept the former Daylight Donut phone number and can be reached at 947-3972.
