One 14-year-old Peabody boy was killed and another injured in a car accident Monday, July 22, in rural Peabody.

Benjaman Neal Bishop, son of Mark Bishop of Florence and Terri Bishop of Peabody, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, a passenger in the vehicle, John H. Goff III, 14, sustained a head trauma and was lifewatched from the scene to Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Lee Becker, Marion County sheriff, reported John’s father said his son was “hanging on.”

Benjaman did not have a restricted driver’s license, according to Becker. “The two boys were fishing in that general area and were coming back home,” he said.

The 1987 Toyota pickup was westbound on 70th, and the accident occurred as the driver lost control of the vehicle, entered a ditch and struck two trees. The location of the accident was three-tenths of a mile east of Quailcreek.

Responding to the scene were the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Peabody Police Department, and Marion County EMS and fire departments from the county.

“Robby Hourseler, a Peabody resident, called it in to Marion dispatch,” Becker said. “And that’s probably what saved the passenger’s life.”
