Augusta scored five runs in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie and carry the team to a 10-7 win over Hillsboro Tuesday at Augusta.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called in the bottom of the second inning because of impending storms.

Hillsboro (3-1) started well against the home team, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Curtis Gooch led off with a single and Steven Chisholm followed with a double. When Ben Walker singled, Gooch scored, but Chisholm was called out at the plate when he tried to score, too.

After Graham Ratzlaff walked and Dustin Jost struck out, Todd Stahlecker doubled to drive in Walker for the second run of the inning.

Hillsboro added a third run in the next inning when Kris Jones scored after a snap throw, by the catcher to pick him off third, skipped into left field.

The lead grew to 4-1 in the fourth when Stahlecker walked, advanced to third on a bloop single by Jerod Metcalf and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones.

The Augusta bats, helped by two Hillsboro errors, came alive in the bottom of the fourth. The home team scored four runs on three hits to grab the lead, 5-4.

Hillsboro tied the score in the top of the fifth when Walker reached on an error and then scored on a double by Ratzlaff.

Shawn Hughbanks relieved Metcalf to start the fateful sixth inning. The first batter flied out, but six of the next seven hitters reached base-five hits and one walk-resulting in five runs and a 10-5 Augusta lead.

Hillsboro came back with two runs in the top of the seventh on two hits, two walks and an Augusta error. But Augusta ace Robert Chavana came in to strikeout Brian Thiessen and Jones to end the game.

Coming-A doubleheader set for last Thursday against the Marion Babe Ruth team was washed out because of rain. It has been tentatively rescheduled for Sunday afternoon, June 30, at Marion.

Hillsboro was scheduled to play a doubleheader Tuesday, June 18, against Lyons at Tabor Field. On Thursday, the team will play host to Buhler for a double dip beginning at 6 p.m.

Next Tuesday, Hillsboro host will welcome Council Grove to Tabor Field for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
